Do you know how to wipe your butt?

This seems to be a stupid question, because the time you wipe your butt may be longer than the time you write your own name. But if we all do it the right way, why are anti-slip patterns so common?

If you have encountered the embarrassing incident of slippage, even if it happens once in a while, it is time to study your butt-wiping skills carefully.

Dr. Joel Clarkman, director of gastroenterology at the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in New Jersey, said there are no hard and fast rules when wiping-except that you probably shouldn't bite the bullet.

Up or down, the paper is folded or bundled, all methods have the same effect.

However, he said, “some people wipe too hard to irritate the anal area,” which can cause painful symptoms such as hemorrhoids or anal abscess. When this happens, he recommends using wet wipes instead.

In fact, more and more people have completely abandoned toilet paper and switched to wet wipes. Howard Stern, for example. ("You can't make anything out of dry paper," he once insisted on his radio show.)

Even if you choose the flushable type—yes, not all wipes can fall off the toilet—be sure to take a closer look at the ingredients.

Joe Graedon, a pharmacologist and co-founder of The People's Pharmacy, a consumer rights protection website, said that many popular brands contain the preservative methyl isothiazolinone, which is "a kind of The components of human allergic reactions".

Some exotic designer brands, such as Dude Wipes-wipes specifically designed for men-do not contain methyl isothiazolinone.

Are wet wipes really more effective than dry toilet paper?

Ryan Meegan, one of the co-creators of Dude Wipes, used this colorful metaphor to explain: “If you want to apply chocolate on your arms or hands, you don’t just use dry tissues. Right?" he said. "You will use wet wipes or wipes to make sure you get all the material."

Dude Wipes are either very cheap or very expensive, depending on how much you think it is fair to invest in a clean butt. Approximately 30 wipes cost US$6.49, or 20 cents per cleaning of the anus.

(We will not compare it to the average cost of a roll of toilet paper, because this will involve calculating the number of toilet paper per roll, which is not the visual image we want today.)

Because obviously, unless it smells like orange, you won't know if your butt is really clean.

Graedon recommends skipping fancy products and buying liquefied witch hazel directly, which he says is cheaper and equally effective. Witch hazel is a shrub whose liquid is distilled from its dry leaves.

He said that buying a bottle at Wal-Mart is less than one and a half dollars. After your usual wiping, put a few drops in a small ball of toilet paper-just enough to wet it-and then wipe your butt for the last time.

Graedon says that you may not be clean at the micro level, but witch hazel cleaning ensures "much less bacterial contamination."

After a bowel movement is not the only time you should pay attention to hip hygiene. A shower is another great opportunity to clean the buttocks.

What we mean by "clean" does not mean "I am sure that some soapy water is flowing in that general direction."

The best strategy is to use hand-held shower heads for direct, close personal cleaning. And buy a bar of soap specifically for your buttocks. Not only to avoid cross-contamination, but also because you are dealing with a particularly sensitive area.

Dr. Krachman emphasizes the use of soaps that are gentle on the skin. When you buy soap, look for words like "gentleness" in the description. Or pick up oatmeal soap like Aveeno.
