Oct. 5—LENOIR — The Rotary Club of Lenoir is asking for donations from the community in order to support local and out-of-state efforts to provide aid after the devastation of Hurricane Ian on the coast of Florida.

As of Tuesday, Oct. 4, over 100 people in Florida and four people in North Carolina have been reported killed by Hurricane Ian. Hundreds of thousands of Florida residents are still without power.

"There is a great need in the Fort Myers area," said Stephen Starnes, president of the Rotary Club of Lenoir. "A lot of philanthropic groups are stepping forward to help."

The Lenoir Rotary Club was contacted by the Rotary Club of Hilton Head in South Carolina for assistance.

Dick Gardner, a member of the Lenoir Rotary Club, will be transporting a truck and trailer full of donated items to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on Tuesday, Oct. 11.

"They needed somebody to make this trip, and I'm retired, so I jumped right on it," he said.

The Lenoir Rotary Club is currently collecting donations from the community. Residents should consider donating items such as diapers, powdered baby formula, baby wipes, cleaning supplies like mops, brooms, disinfectant, Clorox, rubber gloves, latex gloves, flashlights, matches, coolers, trash bags, personal and feminine hygiene products, soap, shampoo, canned goods, bags of dry dog and cat food, and more.

The public may bring donations anytime to Bo's Family Entertainment, Adam Sterken State Farm Agency, the Ethan Gilley Edward Jones Office, the Caldwell Chamber of Commerce offices, and to the United Methodist Church Life Center on Friday, Oct. 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

"Our Rotary Club here helped that Rotary Club up there [at Hilton Head]," said Gardner. "It's always a joint effort between clubs. A lot of times when you donate money to a cause, you never know if it's going to make it to the right place, but when you're dealing with another Rotary Club, you know it's legit and everything goes the way it's supposed to go."

An Oregon serial rapist is set to be released from prison in mid-December after serving nearly 36 years behind bars, almost all of his maximum sentence. Richard Gillmore, arrested in 1986 and called the “jogger rapist” because he staked out victims as he ran by their homes, admitted to raping nine girls in the Portland area in the 1970s and 80s but was only convicted in one case because of the statute of limitations.
