One dollar of each beer sold will go to Rotary International’s worldwide effort to make polio a thing of the past.

BELFAST — Belfast Rotary Club and Marshall Wharf Brewing Co. will present “Pints for Polio” on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Marshall Wharf on the Belfast waterfront.

No reservations are needed for this fundraising event. One dollar of each select beer sold will be donated to Rotary International’s worldwide effort to make polio a thing of the past.

“Marshall Wharf Brewing is really stepping up and Belfast Rotary is very grateful to owners Dann Waldron and Kathleen Dunckel, manager Judith O’Donovan and the Marshall Wharf staff for helping to make this happen,” said Kristine Wentworth, Rotary Club president. “This is a wonderful way to enjoy yourself on the waterfront and do a good deed at the same time. Just come in to Marshall Wharf Brewing between 2 and 6 p.m. on the 25th, have a beer and help Rotary eradicate polio.”

Rotary International, supported by hundreds of thousands of Rotarians around the globe and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has generated more than $1 billion since 1988, when there were 350,000 cases around the globe, to eradicate polio. Today, the world is 99.9% polio free.

Last year polio was found only in Pakistan and Afghanistan. But this year, the virus turned up in wastewater in New York and other U.S. cities, with one active case reported near New York. That is why Rotary is still raising funds to hire health workers and deliver polio vaccine to more than 400 million children every year.

Belfast Rotary Club, founded in 1925, is one of Maine’s largest and most active clubs. Its nearly 70 members meet in person or by Zoom Wednesdays at noon at the Belfast Shrine Club. Belfast Rotary raises funds year-round through activities such as a Polio Pledge Walk, Belfast Harbor Fest, annual charitable golf tournament event, 5K road races and pancake breakfasts.

Its more than $140,000 in yearly charitable gifts include support for Rotary International’s End Polio campaign, seven Waldo County food pantries, year-end holiday clothing and toys for nearly 200 children and $80,000 in scholarships for local college-bound high school students.
