Sep. 9—WILLIMANTIC — The Eastern CT Veterans Community Center will be collecting donations to fill 50 backpacks for homeless and at risk veterans in the state on Saturday.
The drive for "Backpacks for Life" will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Jillson House Museum, which is at 627 Main St.
Windham Region Chamber of Commerce President/Chief Executive Officer Diane Nadeau has partnered with Jamie DePaola, Backpacks for Life coordinator, to help veterans in need.
The following items are being collected: shampoo, conditioner, bar soap with a container, body lotion, sunblock, bug spray, shaving cream, razors (two-blade minimum), deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss/picks, socks, t-shirts, underwear, hand warmers, foot warmers, gloves, watch cap (hat), rain poncho, face masks, nail clipper, lip balm, travel size hand sanitizer, hairbrush/comb, body wipes, notebook, pens, mini flashlight with AA batteries, travel size first aid kid, gift cards from $10-$25 for food, feminine hygiene products, hair care products, face moisturizer, lip gloss, make-up remover wipes and cosmetic bags.
In addition, monetary donations can be made to pay for each kit, which are valued at $50 each, or the backpacks, which are valued at $100 each.
Gallon-size storage bags are also needed to put the backpacks together.
